Dear Parents,

Meeting with students to hear their thoughts and opinions about life at BIS is always a highlight for me. This week I was delighted to have individual meetings scheduled with two groups of students in our school, Year 12 and Year 6.

The role of Prefect in Secondary and House Captain or Vice-Captain in Primary, provide our students with opportunities to develop leadership skills. This week, students aspiring to these positions were interviewed. Being a good role model is one important aspect of any leadership role therefore many of the discussions revolved around our BIS Aide Memoire characteristics: Care, Integrity, Perseverance, Reflection, Enquiry and Respect. Questions also focussed on our vision for all students at BIS of being ambitious for themselves and others in addition to being true global citizens. A true leader will also take charge of situations and have a positive impact on student life over the course of the year. I feel confident that an amazing group of aspiring leaders have been chosen for the year ahead.

The Year 12 students interviewed were well informed about systems in place here at BIS. Students who have been here for 5 or 6 years, invariably talked about all the improvements they had seen both in the standard of English and increased diversity. By diversity they gave examples of how students were increasingly welcoming of differences of opinions and of different nationalities. Many ideas for further improvements centred on the overuse of technologies at break times. Students interviewed felt that younger secondary pupils should be encouraged to be more social and engage in more board games, sports and conversation outside of the classroom. Our newly elected Prefects are hoping to offer more choices for ‘free-time’ in the coming year.

Year 6 students were very well informed about the benefits of our BIS Superheroes in reminding us of the best way to behave. They felt that improvements in the playground could be made as they don’t like the fact that some students only play with others from the same nationality as themselves. Ways of helping children to mix better were suggested, for example better ways of selecting teams in football and encouraging others by setting good examples themselves.

A further chance for our students to take charge and make a difference was presented to our secondary students on Monday, when representatives from the Wilderness Foundation visited BIS to raise awareness of the plight of the rhino. BIS have been invited to take part in a competition to write or illustrate strong messages to help others to understand the importance of protecting the rhinos. Great prizes are on offer as the winning students will be invited to South Africa to see rhinos in the wild. VTV4 were present to interview our students.

I was immensely proud of our students this week and I look forward to seeing some of their ideas take fruition as the year progresses.
