Collaborative Conversations in Early Years

Working on the junk modelling table making Pumpkin Masks for Halloween, Ignacio showed me a boat he had made from Duplo- a boat he had made several times before.  Leaving the children to work independently and  join Ignacio on the construction mat, this is how the conversation unveiled…

Ignacio: I've made a fishing boat in the Maldives. Fishing boats are easy to make.
Ms. Karen: Why don't you make an aeroplane then?

Ignacio: They are easy too.

Ms. Karen: I would like to see how you design one.
Ignacio: Ok.

Within minutes he had built one.

Ms. Karen: Ok could you make a spaceship?

Ignacio: No it's a bit hard.

Again he thought and tried various options. Soon it was complete.

Ms. Karen: Can you make a helicopter?

Ignacio: No I don't know how too. Show me how to do it?

Ms. Karen: I’m sure you can build one without my help!
Ignacio: I don't know how. I want you to teach me.

We decided to research helicopters on the iPad.

Ms. Karen: What can we use for the propellers?
He looked, shaking his head, producing a cuboid piece of Duplo from the box.

At this point Katie arrived. We discussed the designs of Ignacio's Duplo vehicles.
Katie dived into the box.

Katie: Look Ms. Karen, we can use this umbrella!
