Student Leaders Arrive in Washington DC

As the rest of the students head off for their summer holidays, eighteen students and two teachers from the British International School, Pudong Campus have embarked on their own exciting journey to attend the ten-day Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) in the US.

The group arrived in Washington DC on June 30th and, despite the long flight, all the students were raring to go for the first day of meetings, speaker events and sight-seeing.

In Washington DC, the conference is being held at the prestigious Sheraton Pentagon Hotel in Arlington. The students will spend five days there before taking a road trip to New York with a stop-over in Philadelphia’s historic district. The New York leg of the conference will be housed at the Manhattan College.

The GYLC brings together over 3,000 outstanding young people from around the world every year, to build leadership skills and qualities in a global context. Some of the skills that the conference aims to develop include cross-cultural communication, creative and critical thinking, public speaking and diplomacy. The students will be divided into small leadership group meetings (LGMs) of 15-20 persons and will be led by a qualified faculty advisor.

The aims of the conference will be achieved through site visits, simulations and speaking events, culminating in a global summit session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. To cap an exciting ten days, the scholars get treated to a Hudson River dinner and cruise.

This is the fourth year the school is sending scholars to this increasingly popular conference. The scholars are looking forward to a memorable and educational experience and hope to develop networks with other like-minded students from all over the world.
