An Educated Guess

This week in Math’s, Year 6 have been using estimation to support their work in solving problems, and in checking answers to calculations. As we all know, Estimation is a key skill in Math’s and across the year group, children have been drawing on prior knowledge to decipher whether their answers to a problem can be correct of if they are way off!

The Mastering group have taken this a step further and spent their lessons creating almost impossible calculations for one another! Using four step, multiple operation problems, the class set one another questions to solve, using their estimation skills to before calculating, to judge their accuracy.

Working initially in table teams, and then smaller teams of Beginning, Developing and Mastering groups, children gathered produced mind boggling problems which included four step operations, indices and brackets, as well as rounding and estimating! Their teacher, Mrs Alderson, was blown away by the amount of work they got through. Having created questions as a team they then pooled the questions together until they had twenty questions for their table team. Each team then battled against one another to estimate and calculate their answers!

The winning team was "The Pencils" consisting of Phoebe, Josh, James, Grace and Sophia, who all received house points as a prize for their collaborative work, adaptable thinking and general enthusiasm!

Congratulations to all of Mrs Alderson’s class. Judging from this lesson and others I have heard about, you are working like geniuses! Keep it up!
