Gateway to the World in Year 4

Our Gateways to the World Topic is well under way, with Year 4 using their skills to work as geographers.

The Entry Point to the topic involved the children playing fun games connected to airports and then making their own for homework. They were incredible! So much thought had gone into them. Year 4 evaluated each other’s games by playing them and discussing their effectiveness based on ease of instructions, enjoyment and relevance to the topic.

Researching using atlases is always exciting for Year 4 and this time was no exception, as they plotted the countries they had been to and a country they would like to travel to in the future.  Enthusiastically, they used different sources to investigate this country to produce travel leaflets and PowerPoints.

Year 4 have also been drawing flow charts to explain the process once you get to the airport and studying different international airport maps. Always wanting to improve on the original, children have been working in groups to design their own airport map, including the use of keys to the wonderful facilities they would like inside.

Next, Year 4 will be working as artists as they evaluate current airline logos and design their own to be used on the tail of a plane. On the subject of art, we now have our very own Year 4 art exhibition display space. An art competition took place at NAIS and Year 4 was asked to use wax relief to produce pictures of iconic buildings in Shanghai. They are stunning and can be viewed on the 2nd floor of B Block at the end of the corridor near the Year 4 classrooms.

Amongst all the topic work, art competitions and all the other subjects Year 4 works hard on,  we have also been gearing up for the Christmas season. Emphasis has been on teamwork, as children, teachers and teaching assistants worked together to produce the most beautiful and creative displays. The whole Primary theme is the Polar Express and Year 4’s ‘station’ is Reindeerville. See if you can spot the reindeers in our displays!
