Nan Bei Hu - Year 5 Residential

27 四月 2015

Our Year 5 children and teachers arrived back from Nan Bei Hu in one piece and very much in good spirits. The children were incredibly well behaved and, as expected, did the school proud with good manners, courtesy and bravery. The Nan Bei Hu residential is an excellent introduction and preparation for the Year 6 Project Week next year. The children have had an opportunity to gain independence and practice self-organization as well as take part in a variety of activities that takes them out of their comfort zone.

Outdoor education is a wonderful opportunity for students and research suggests it has a profound effect on a child’s educational outcomes. The direct outcomes, clear goals and the fact students are constantly in their challenge zone makes the days away highly beneficial. Of course, not every child is confident about staying away from home or taking part in the activities and it is these students who should be most proud of their achievements for getting through with grit and determination. As a result of the successes of Year 5 residentials, we are looking into building a program from Year 3 upwards which builds steadily towards our Year 6 experience. Watch this space!

I am sure after such an action-packed week, the children will have been excited to discuss their time away but equally exhausted. I had the pleasure of catching Ms. Lawrence, the trip leader, on Friday and she practically needed matchsticks to keep her eyes open! I’d like to take the opportunity to thank Ms. Lawrence for organizing the residential as well as Mr. McGuigan, Mr. Finan, Ms, Gan, Ms. King and Mr. Hayley for helping support the students through the week.
