Despite initial forecasts of rain, none eventuated, and we were able to go ahead with our massive outdoor carnival. The scene on the field and surrounds was of a hive of activity and there was no limit to the fun to be had. From rock climbing to water sliding, obstacle course running to bucking bull riding, there was an activity for thrill seekers of all ages. The fair games were a favourite, with children taking their chances and testing their skills on the coconut shy, hoop throwing, lucky dip, splat the rat, noughts and crosses and many more.
A big thank you to all of the students and teachers who manned the games and activities booths, and many of the stalls, helping to make the day a huge success.
The incoming student leaders had their own booth where they introduced the Pudong Tiger, our school mascot, and ran a competition to name it. Soon a shortlist of names will be announced and students will be able to cast their vote. The student leaders also asked people to add their hand prints and thoughts to two canvases; one looking at our heritage as BISS Pudong and another looking to the future of NAIS Pudong. They also sold the new NAIS Pudong wristbands to raise money for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.
Our talented students, teachers and parents ensured the main stage provided non-stop entertainment for more than five hours, in a marathon which included our school choirs, the KS3 Rock Band, cheerleaders, kung fu and a huge crowd favourite, the rap-off for Nepal where our senior students battled it out against the teachers for rapping supremacy.
There was no chance of going hungry with food alley offering tasty delights from around the world. Vibrant among the food vendors were our Latin Mamas serving their famous paella and sangria while adding to the atmosphere with an infectious Latin music soundtrack.
This event is the culmination of months of planning and preparation by a dedicated team of Community Group volunteers, led by Chairperson Jody Dexter, who put in hundreds of hours of work to ensure the Summer Festival’s success. As the main school charity fundraiser of the year, this is a hugely important event to ensure our continued support for our main charities, Shanghai Sunrise and HuiXin Orphanage.
