In English we will begin by focusing on our Dictionary and Thesaurus skills, in particular how to quickly and effectively find words.  This will be linked to our Topic work as students will be looking up the definitions and spelling of vocabulary words that help describe the different parts of the body.  We will then begin looking at Non-Fiction texts, in particular being able to read and retrieve information from these types of text to develop a deeper understanding of our new topic. Through the study of Non-Fiction text, students will begin to develop their own writing using simple organisational devices such as headings and subheadings.

In Mathematics we will be revisiting Measurement and seeing what students remember of converting different measures.  After this we will focus on measuring and converting length, height, weight and volume.  This will all be tied into our Topic of the Human Body as we will be collecting data for next week’s focus of data collection and presentation.

We will be beginning our new Topic of How Humans Work next week.  Initially we will be doing a knowledge harvest to see what the children know about the Human Body.  This will include asking them about how they think certain systems within the body work and also identify some of the questions that they would like answered within this topic.

After this we have an exciting Entry Point planned where students will be making child sized models of a human body.  They will then be drawing in different parts of the body such as the skeleton, internal organs, nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system and the respiratory system based on what they presently know.  It will be interesting for the children to refer back to this initial drawing after their learning to compare this with what the actual human systems look like.

We will be reviewing the steps of Scientific Investigations and then start looking at the parts of the eye, how the eye works and the effects of reflections and shadows.
