Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

Information and Reminders

Thank you for all your efforts with the children’s Dress Up day last Monday; it was a huge success and really excited the children for their new unit of learning.

Please could parents make sure all children have a suitable coat for the cold weather and are wearing appropriate school uniform. Please refer to this week’s newsletter in which Mrs Passante outlines suitable clothing to wear to keep warm in the colder weather.

Academic Review Evenings will take place on the 26th and 27th of January from 17.00 – 20.00. You have received an email outlining how to book an appointment to meet with your child’s teachers; we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Sunday 31st January - Chinese Temple Fair 11:00 - 15:00

Next week, children will continue to focus on their understanding of the use of cohesive devices within their writing. We will revisit the use of fronted adverbials (including time and place adverbials) along with conjunctions and combine this with the use of expanded noun phrases to build cohesion within sentences. Children will work towards producing an extended piece of writing at the end of the week. Within Reading, children will study books which are structured in different ways and develop an understanding of reasons for reading for a range of purposes.

Next week in maths we will continue our work on fractions. Children will study the following objectives:

  • To use common factors to simplify fractions; use common multiples to express fractions in the same denomination.
  • To compare and order fractions, including fractions >1.
  • To associate a fraction with division and calculate decimal fraction equivalents for a simple fraction.
  • To recall and use equivalences between simple fractions, decimals and percentages, including in different contexts.
  • To add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers, using the concept of equivalent fractions.

Children will all be given opportunities to work on these objectives independently to demonstrate their understanding as well as working collaboratively to develop knowledge and use the skills of solving fraction problems in real life contexts.

Continuing with our unit of evolution and inheritance, children will develop their knowledge of evolution across the timeline. Each class will develop their timeline and investigate the importance of fossils. In conjunction with this, children will develop their understanding of food chains and focus on the objectives of understanding how animals survive, how humans evolve, how we are unique and how we change.  There will be a number of different research techniques which children will explore, including scanning QR codes to take them to specific websites. Children will also develop their skills in how they deliver and present their information and learning.
