Year 7 News - 29 January

Even though it has been very cold of late, the hive of activity in Year 7 has not stopped. As you will read in our ‘View from the Classroom’ there are many interesting and stimulating activities going on in classrooms across school. However, life at NAIS Pudong is about much more then fantastic lessons. The opportunities that are offered as CCAs as well as lunch time activities really do make school life special. From debating to cooking classes to yoga there is a true diverse selection of activities for our students.

View from the classroom

Art – Year 7 have finished their pieces based on cells and will shortly have their work exhibited in Block C. Next week they shall be starting their sculpture unit of work based on Henry Moore.

History – Mr. Dawson's History class have just begun their new unit on the Romans, investigating the key question: 'How civilised were the Romans?' We are investigating gladiators, entertainment, empire and army at the moment.

English - The early part of this term is all about creative writing.  Stories, characters and descriptions will form the basis of our creative ventures this term so expect an unleashing of your child's inner Dickens!

PE – As always there is lots of activity in PE. To mention a few highlights, Year 7 girls have been enjoying step aerobics with Miss Sparkes, improving their personal fitness. Whilst others have been playing target ball and developing skills in working within teams.

French - Miss Ford's French class made another French post on the Global Campus this week, where they wrote to their partner classes in Beijing and in Switzerland all about their houses in French. They're waiting to see what the other classes write in response!

ICT - Students are learning formulas, referencing and graphs in spreadsheets and creating their own spells with formulas and graphs they have learnt so far in the unit.

Science - Set 2 have completed their topic on Energy and have started a chemistry unit looking at solids, liquids and gases. Next week they will be using their iPads for some videos of a diffusion reaction. Then learning the basics of atoms, elements, molecules, compounds and mixtures.

DT – The year group have been getting to know the workshop and building on their knowledge from Year 6. They have been learning to use the scroll saw and how to finish timber in a professional manner.

Mandarin - In Year 7 Mandarin beginners group, students are learning about continents and countries. By studying this topic students have realized that in Mandarin, Chinese has also borrowed many words from English and other languages therefore the pronunciation of these words is very similar to English or the other languages. Students have compared the Chinese pronunciation of these countries and continents to their English pronunciation as well as the pronunciation of these words in each country. Then students will be looking at what words in their first language which they have borrowed from another language and discuss why this happened.
