Year 5 Week Ahead - 8th January 2016

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope you all had a lovely holiday. It is so great to have all the children back with a buzz of excitement about their holidays.

Tuesday 26th January - Year 5 Exhibition on The Great, The Bold and The Brave! We would like all children to come to school on this day dressed as either a Roman or Greek. More information with exact times will follow soon.

We will soon be starting our new topic - Being Human - at the end of January. Our entry point is for the children to meet people who are in professions or have an interest in helping people look after their bodies. Therefore, if you or someone you know is a doctor, nurse, dentist, optician, fitness instructor, yoga teacher, dance teacher etc... and would be happy to come in to school and give a little talk to the children then please contact your child's class teacher.

The children have now received their Global Campus passports. Whenever your child completes one of the activities or competitions they will receive a stamp in their passport.


In English, the children will be revising their knowledge of conjunctive adverbs and modal verbs when writing a persuasive advert. The children will be using their imagination to write an advertisement for a new Roman king.
Next, the children will be working in collaborative groups to collect information using a range of sources about Alfred the Great. As the week continues, they will turn these notes into a biography. The focus is on linking ideas within and across paragraphs to build cohesion.
Finally, the children will try to infer Alfred's thoughts and feelings at different points in his life using drama.


In Maths, the children will begin the week by investigating perimeter. They will be calculating the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes. Then, the children will be measuring the perimeter of rectilinear shapes.
As the week progresses, we will then focus on problem solving. The children will be utilising their skills for solving problems involving money. Then, they will focus on problems involving numbers to 3 decimal places.
At the end of the week, our attention will turn to rounding. The children will be answering questions and solving problems which involve rounding any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10,  100,  1000,  10,000 and 100,000.


We are now coming towards the end of our unit: The Great, The Bold and The Brave!
Next week we are moving away from the Romans and starting to look at the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. As Historians, we will begin the week using a range of sources to find out about the Anglo-Saxons. We will be considering invading and settling and the impact this has on different people. The children will be looking at different artifacts and images to think about what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons.

As Geographers, the children will look at where the Vikings and Saxons originated from using Atlases. They will research the climate of these countries and consider why the Vikings wanted to invade other lands.

At the end of the week, the children will be looking at the Bayeux tapestry. The children will then learn about the key battles during this time and the significance of the Battle of Hastings. The children will be placing the events on a timeline. As a class, we will then look back along the class timeline that we have covered during this unit and discuss with the children significant events that shaped the history of different countries.
