Year 5 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

Information and Reminders

Next week we will begin our new topic ‘The Great, The Bold and the Brave’. Starting with our Entry Point on Tuesday. As we will be constructing models as part of a team challenge, any (clean) used packaging would be much appreciated. We are looking for bottles, egg boxes, cups, containers and cardboard to complete our challenge, and so any donations brought in before Tuesday would be great!

STEAM Day – On Thursday, all of our students will be participating in STEAM Day. The children will come off timetable for the day and instead participate in three activities throughout the day, with their teachers, which will be STEAM based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths). We are keeping these activities a tightly guarded secret until next week, but we can promise that the children will have a very exciting day next Thursday.

Please note that due to the ACAMIS tournament taking place on Friday 28th October there will be no PE lessons for students.

Stars of the Week

Star of the Week in 5A is Laura Sedano Curiel for showing a mature attitude to work

As we begin our new topic, we begin an exciting new unit of work based on Lynne Reid Bank’s ‘Tiger. Tiger’. Linked to our work on ancient civilizations, this novel looks at the lives of two different tiger cubs in The Roman Empire. As we begin looking at the prologue and introductory chapter, we will be summarizing passages, and developing our skimming and scanning skills. We will then be looking at how the author’s style picks up on character viewpoint, and through exploring author’s use of language, we will begin to plan and draft our ideas for the coming chapters.



Next week in Mathematics, we will focus on a revision of place value. Through a focus on counting and comparing numbers, we will explore the value of different columns when reading numbers, both before and after the decimal place. In Ms. Preston’s group, this will include some extension work looking at metric unit prefixes such as mega- and tera-, We will also be looking at negative numbers, especially when these are placed in the context of a sequence that passes through zero. To achieve Expected, we will show understanding of negative to positive sequences, and may even look at how negatives and positives add or subtract together in order to achieve Mastering. We will also be revisiting our work on Roman Numerals, and will solve number sentences written using these!



On Monday we will host our Exit Point for other classes to come and attend, an interactive workshop of information gathered about endangered animals. As International Citizens, students will present their work in a light that looks at wider global changes. Then, after our team challenge exit point on Tuesday, we will begin to look at the principles of democracy, as we go back in time to Ancient Greece!
