With an amazing Big Draw event on Thursday this week, we begin with the Art department. The Big Draw saw all of our pupils collaborate on two different projects during the day. The first project saw pupils drawing on huge white canvasses. Any design was allowed and pupils really showed how creative they could be; from sketches of famous people and teachers to abstract patterns involving circles. Pupils were also involved in decorating some eye catching blue plastic sheets using white pens. These will really look fantastic when they are displayed on our walls. The other project was drawing on different body parts of what will be a huge dragon. This impressive sculpture was made using chicken wire and a papier-mâché covering. A huge thanks to Mr Thomas for being able to produce so many parts for the pupils to decorate! The finished dragon will be hung in C Block once all the parts are assembled. I for one am looking forward to seeing the finished piece of work! Pupils also had the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, David Proctor. I know they had an amazing experience and it’s something they would love to repeat in the near future.

In Music on Tuesday we had a visit from Leeds College of Music. This was mainly to speak to IB students about choosing a musical course at university. It also allowed us to have a year 8 master class with one of their Saxophone players. Currently the Year 8 classes are working on improvisation and our guest player treated them to some wonderfully created improvisations based on our core Juilliard work Blue Monk. He showed the pupils which notes to play and gave them guidelines on how to formulate their own improvisations for their class work. The students had a fantastic time and ended up singing and clapping as ‘the band’ while the sax played over the top!
