Student's Voice: STEAM Days

On Thursday NAIS held an event called STEAM Day, which is where students spend the day doing activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. As part of the Art curriculum for STEAM, some fortunate students were selected to participate in the art workshop. There, we studied under Mr David Procter, a professional illustrator who specialises in using calligraphy brushes. He gave a presentation about his work and the process of creating a commissioned piece of artwork. Then, he introduced us to the 'Tile Cats' of Yunnan Province.

'Tile Cats' are usually placed on top of roofs of houses. It is said that cats made from tile are able to devour monsters and demons, protecting the family that lives in their house. Mr. Procter has been painting 'Tile Cats' with ink, and he showed us his work. Later, we began to experiment with the calligraphy brushes  to produce different lines and textures. After understanding how to use the brush, we could begin to paint some cats. To familiarise ourselves with painting the cats, we made a practice piece based on the work of Mr. Procter.

When we finished painting our practice piece, we focused on design by creating a compilation of features for our next cat, which would be framed. Finally after practicing our skills using the brushes and creating a unique design, we began to paint our final Tile Cat. It was amazing to see all the Tile Cats the group painted, many of which will be framed and displayed around the school.
