Message from Secondary - 18th November

18 十一月 2016

We hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend! While it’s only been a four day week, we’ve had plenty of excitement at NAIS celebrating the success of the FOBISIA teams in Manila last week and with visits from author David Greenberg and bagpiper Ross Jennings.

David Greenberg is the son of Martin Luther King’s attorney and spoke to our Year 9 students about civil rights in the USA. It was clear from the questions that students asked that they were making links between what Mr Greenberg was saying and what they had learned in their History lessons. Mr Greenberg ran poetry workshops with Years 7 and 8. The workshops included readings from Mr Greenberg's books and lots of engaging activities to get the students writing their own poems. Additionally, the students really enjoyed listening to Ross Jennings play the bagpipes and talk about his life as a travelling piper!

This week Mrs Wallace, Mr Lawrence and Year 13 student Ashley Fung have had an interesting but extremely tough job judging the twenty five entries for the MIT trip. The students were tasked with developing a thoughtful practical joke that relates to learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths using a cardboard tube – MIT calls this ‘hacking’. The students had obviously worked extremely hard on developing their ideas and the judges have been wowed with what they’ve seen. We will announce the winners of this in our newsletter next week!

Our annual Options Evening is taking place on Wednesday 30th November from 5-8pm. We strongly advise parents of students in Year 9 and 11 to attend this event with your children to learn about the next steps in your child’s journey at NAIS. There will be presentations on the IGCSE and IB Diploma programmes as well as on Higher Education and Careers. Refreshments will be available.

Best wishes for the weekend,

Carol Camargo and Therese Andrews
