Letter from the Head of Primary - 18th February 2016

We have had a wonderfully busy week after the Chinese New Year holidays. The children have returned to school bursting with energy and have been keen to get right back into their topics.

It was an exciting week for Year 2, as they had not only an exit point, but also an entry point to their new topic. On Tuesday, their parents were invited to come and find out what the children had been learning about in their topic ‘The Magic Toymaker’. The students shared with their parents information about toys from the past compared to present day toys, including materials they were made from and how they were played with. Parents even had the chance to try some of the toys out. In addition to this, the Year 2 children then had an exciting LEGO workshop where they had to try and build a catapult which could hurl an object the furthest distance.

The following day, Year 2 then prepared for their new topic ‘People from the Past’ by dressing up as famous people from the past. During their topic, Year 2 are going to be finding out about some key historical figures who changed the world, such as Edmund Hillary and Christopher Columbus. A super start to the week for Year 2.

Wednesday morning also saw many parents attend our two monthly coffee mornings. Both were extremely well attended, particularly our Reading and Phonics workshop for parents of Early Years and Infants students. Mr Shackleton and Mrs Keenan provided an insight into how we deliver phonics in the classroom and the various stages of progression from Nursery to Year 2, before then discussing reading and some helpful hints for parents on how they can support their child with reading at home. Parents even had the opportunity to try out their new found skills on each other during a role-play activity in the Hive.

Our second workshop for Junior parents focused on the use of technology. Mr Scrymgeour first highlighted some useful advice for parents on eSafety and how to monitor use of technology in the home, before Mr Paez demonstrated how we use the iPads in our Primary classrooms. Parents again had the opportunity to have a hands-on ‘taster’ of using some of our school apps on the iPad.

We will be putting the information from our two workshops on our website next week for all parents to access. In the meantime, we encourage our parents to let us know if there is a topic you would like us to cover in our monthly workshops. Please just drop either myself or Mr Scrymgeour an email.

As the week draws to a close, we enjoyed our first class assembly of the spring term with Mrs Finan’s class, 1A, telling us all about what they had learned as part of their ‘Holidays from the Past’ topic. We were also treated to a sneak preview of the upcoming ‘Beauty and the Beast’ production which opens in just three weeks’ time.

This promises to be a very busy, but fun, second half of the spring term and I know from the Primary school we are all looking forward to sharing with you the many events coming up.
