Letter from the Director of Music and The Arts - 4th February

04 二月 2016

This week my main focus is on our eagerly awaited school production, Beauty and the Beast.

All the Arts in school are now fully engaged in our show ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Your youngest child will be bringing home a flyer with instructions on how to book, so please don’t miss out and purchase your tickets soon! The last night, Friday 11th March, is already nearly sold out.

Our musicians have been working so hard in what is a very demanding and challenging Broadway musical score and they are loving being in the orchestral pit at the front of the stage. The orchestra consists of 2 Violins, 2 Cellos, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Trumpet, Piano, Keyboard and Drums.

The Drama Department, having finished all of the blocking a few weeks ago, is now working hard on gestures and facial expressions to bring to life the flare, energy and emotions of these very well-known Disney characters. The costumes are now starting to come in; some have been made in school but the more complicated ones have been made by a company outside of school. The Chorus Ensemble have all been given pictures to help source their own costumes.

I have been very impressed with the student assistant directors. They have directed a few of the scenes in the show solely, with only some small guidance, and what they have produced has been remarkable given none of them had previous directing experience.

The Art Department has produced some superb paintings that are going to be the backdrops for the main scenes we have in the show and they have also started to build the Beast mask that will be worn for the performances.

Our school dance group is finalising their last bits of choreography and perfecting their movements whilst wearing costumes and masks in some of the scenes, not at all easy!

In the DT department Mr Mills is working diligently on creating the visually stunning set we designed and some of the pupils have made Chips’ trolley as part of their CCA. Finally, in the Film CCA, students have been developing shots and small videos during some of our rehearsals to use to make a trailer for the production.

As you can see it’s a truly full-on Arts production!
