Tuesday 8th March - Friday 11th March - Beauty and the Beast

Thursday 10th March - Careers and University Fair - the Year 5 and Year 6 students will be visiting the Careers Fair to conduct a Careers ‘scavenger hunt’. The students will also be bringing home a piece of homework this week linked to this event.

Monday 14th – Friday 18th - Space themed Book Week

Monday 14th March – Book Week Parade, 9am

Monday 14th March – Whole school coffee morning, getting the most out of our Learning Centre, 9.30 to 10.30am

Next week in English, we will be launching a text related to our new topic, ‘Space Explorers’. As we are also looking at a space and science-fiction focus for Book Week, we will be exploring our Book Week text, ‘Team Moon’. This book looks at all the people involved in launching the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, and the challenges they faced. While the book is non-fiction, we will be linking this to some of the objectives we have recently covered. In particular, we will be unpicking figurative language, researching the space race, making predictions and drawing inferences linked to the figures mentioned in the book.  


Next week in Maths the children will be reinforcing their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes. They will then have the opportunity to identify specific shapes from perspective and isometric drawings. The next objective will be to distinguish between regular and irregular polygons before moving on to measuring and drawing given angles. After that, the children will then identify specific angles from a point, half turn and whole turn. Towards the end of the week, they will have the added challenge of estimating acute, obtuse and reflex angles.


As Scientists, the children will begin the new topic ‘Space Explorers’. During the knowledge harvest, the children will have the opportunity to show what they already know about the sun, moon and Earth and what they would like to find out. To further engage the children, they will be challenged to build a rocket using recyclable materials. The first lesson is focused on comparing the size of the sun, moon and other planets. We will use a range of differently sized sports balls to emphasise the comparisons. After this, the children will learn some facts about the planets in our Solar System. At the end of the week, we will look at how the Earth orbits the sun.
