19 四月 2016

As part of their IPC topic of Temples, Tombs and Treasures, students in Year 4 have been making Shabtis, or funerary figurines, similar to those which were used in Ancient Egypt.

Working with the medium of clay, the students spent a fun afternoon perfecting their figurines and considering how they were an important part of the funeral ritual. Students have been learning that the Ancient Egyptians believed mummifying the body of a deceased person would allow them to reach the Afterlife. Shabtis were usually placed in the tomb and were intended to act as servants or minions of the deceased.

After learning about the mummification process, in only seemed right that students engaged in some fun activities and made and designed their own Shabtis.
