NAIS Pudong Choir at ANZAC Dawn Service

Just after first light on Monday 25th April, a combined NAIS Pudong choir led the singing at the ANZAC Dawn Service which commemorates Australian and New Zealand armed forces personnel who lost their lives in service of their country. The day itself is the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on the Gallipoli Peninsular 101 years ago, their first major military action in World War 1.

The somber commemoration ceremony was held at the Australian Consulate, and led by the Consuls-General of Australia, New Zealand and Turkey who each spoke of the courage and mutual respect of the soldiers on both sides of the conflict during the Gallipoli campaign, reminding the attendees of the enormous losses of life in that and other wars.

NAIS Pudong students, teachers and Australian and New Zealand parents, in total 23 singers conducted by Mr Phil Bailey and with Mr Bevan Graham on piano, all joined together to sing the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand, with the first verse in Maori providing a little extra challenge for most of the singers. They also led the hymn “Abide with Me”.
The ceremony included the traditional laying of wreaths and bugler playing of The Last Post, as well as a traditional ANZAC Day breakfast including ANZAC biscuits and lamingtons.
