Stars of the Week

4A:  Bethan

4B:  Shen

4C:  Lutz

In English we will be focusing on writing a newspaper report. This will tie in with our learning in topic of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Students will be working as reporters to explain what happened at the time of discovery. Looking at two different texts, students will be analysing the information and including the important parts. We will also be revisiting using speech marks as they will be interviewing witnesses and adding quotes to their writing.

As we have been focusing on the topic of perimeter in geometry for the past week, we are going to continue and connect our learning to the understanding of area. Initially we will be learning how to find the area of a rectilinear shape by counting squares within it. We will then move on to drawing rectilinear shapes with a given area. After this, we will be learning how to use efficient strategies, such as multiplication or repeated addition, to find the area of rectilinear shapes. This all will then be used to enhance our learning of area by using these skills in practical situations.

Next week, we will be continuing our work on making our own canopic jars. In addition to this, we will be using the medium of clay to create a cartouche with the children's names written in hieroglyphics. We will then be learning about the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by the archaeologist Howard Carter. Being one of the most important finds in history, Tutankhamun's tomb enabled archaeologists to learn a lot about ancient Egyptian life. This tomb was one of the only ones that was not broken into and looted. Finally, we will begin investigating the ancient civilization of Sumer as students will be comparing it to ancient Egypt.
