Hong Kong Action Films in IB Film

10 五月 2016

In Film, Year 12 students have been studying various movements in Asian Cinema, most recently Hong Kong action films. Traditional Chinese adventure films would portray sword fights and armies, but Hong Kong modernised the genre with high-paced action and chase scenes.

We have enjoyed looking at male and female stars and their unique on-screen persona, from Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan, and Maggie Cheung to Zhang Ziyi.

The best bit for students was putting Hong Kong action into real action, rolling multiple cameras on a chase scene around the school. They have become adept at deconstructing a film text and have been able to recreate the sequences from the best chases in the movies in our own building. The group has really taken it to the next level, incorporating choreographed fighting that uses the ‘centre framing’ technique inspired by Mad Max, that helped the film to win the Editing Oscar this year.

The results are brilliant, as can be seen in the screenshots. The sequence and production lessons learned can be applied to other situations or students can plan to include a short chase in their final piece next year that will certainly support excellent assessment outcomes.
