English
In English this week, the children will be focusing on relative clauses, adverbials, conjunctions and parenthesis. We will use the story ‘Where the forest meets the sea’ as our text. At the start of the week, the children will be writing about what they see in the forest – using relative clauses (focusing on words; ‘where’, ‘that’ and ‘whose’). This will lead into the next session, where we will focus on adverbials for time, place and number. Towards the end of the week, we will review our learning of coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. We will write sentences about the book using parenthesis, focusing in particular on the use of dashes.
Maths
Next week in Maths, the children will predominantly be focusing on problem solving using all four operations which will be linked to real-life situations. Reinforcing understanding of factors, multiples, squares and cubes will be incorporated into differentiated problems for the children to solve, followed by scaling rates and simple fractions. The children will then interpret remainders in division and demonstrate their ability to use formal written methods. Finally, knowledge of percentages and decimals will be challenged through further problem solving activities.
Topic
Next week in Topic, we will be going full steam ahead with our work on ‘The Holiday Show’. Having considered different tourists types, we will now be focusing specifically on Shanghai’s tourism, using maps, brochures and guides to consider the role of Tourist Information Centres. In groups, we will be designing our own tourist map. We will also be focusing on ethical tourism in our Guidance lessons, considering the nature of the global industry, its pros and cons and the impact upon ecosystems, natural resources, settlements and economic activity. We will focus specifically on ecotourism after looking at how tourism affects specific attractions, such as the Great Barrier Reef or the Antarctic.
