English
Next week in English, we will finish reading ‘The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip’. The children will role play being children on the field trip and explore the characters’ thoughts and feeling at various points. They will then write a diary entry recounting the trip. For this, the children will have to consider their use of tenses, making sure they use the correct past tense verb ending. The children will also consolidate their understanding of how to use speech marks correctly in dialogue, as well as revising the correct form of ‘a’ or ‘an’ in a sentence.
In guided reading next week, the children will share their understanding of a text by writing a summary of the key parts of a story.
The spelling objective next week will be the suffix ‘tion’.
Maths
In Maths next week, we move on to our next unit on number sense. We will focus on fractions for the week. The children will develop and consolidate their understanding of equivalent fractions by identifying fractions with the same and different denominators. They will progress to adding and subtracting fractions with mixed denominators, as well as learning how to recognise and use fractions as numbers. To complete the week, they will apply their skill in using fractions to help them solve word problems.
Topic
As technologists, next week in topic the children will design and make their own model house. To apply their learning about circuits, the children will have to include lights and a door bell in their house, all linked to the same circuit! They will have to explore how to create a series circuit, how many batteries they will need to support their circuit and they will also have to design and build furniture to hide the components of the circuit safely! To prepare for this, we are collecting a variety of ‘junk modelling’ resources – empty plastic containers, bottle tops, tissue boxes, scraps of material, kitchen roll holders etc. If you have any of these to spare, we would really appreciate it if you could send them in.
