Year 5 Week Ahead Information

Information and Reminders

All library book should have been returned, if you have lost or misplaced a book the fee to replace it will be 100rmb.

You should have received a letter about the class parties, please liaise with your child’s class rep about food contributions. The children may bring clothes to get changed into for the parties.

If your child will be leaving school before the last day on Friday please could you inform your child’s class teacher.

This week in English, the children will be learning the difference between a biography and an autobiography. Using their timeline of their lives, they will start to sequence important events such as; their birth, their first day of school, sporting/dramatic achievements and cultural or religious events they have participated in. The children will complete a draft copy of their autobiography at the start of the week; then they will copy their autobiographies in best at the end of the week. If they wish, the children can bring into school some photographs of events in their life; which, they can glue onto their completed autobiography.


This week in Maths we will be teaching different objectives in each set so we can focus on what our sets need.

Next week, Mr McGuigan’s set will be recapping on a range of prior learning using all four operations. We will also focus on fun problem-solving activities linked to the summer holidays. This will include having a budget and managing their own money in preparation for any trips they make.  

In Mr Johnson and Ms Lawrence’s set, we will still be focusing on UEFA Euro tournament. The children will be calculating the perimeter and area of different pitches, as well as different parts of the pitch. After this, the children will be using their knowledge of coordinates to place different football players in the correct places on the pitches. Then, they will use their algebra skills to solve some equations linked to the tournament. Finally, we will end the year by competing in collaborative teams to solve a quiz about their learning this year.

In Ms. Preston’s set, we will be continuing our algebra focus. We will take part in some problem-solving investigations linked to creating equations, and will see if we can collect like terms, and use substitution when completing a pair of equations. To end a very successful year in maths, we will celebrate with some mathematical challenges and quizzes. Well done, everyone!


Next week, we will be focusing on being artists. As sketchers, we will be completing observational drawings of famous landmarks and, as painters, we will be exploring the use of different brush strokes. We will then combine these into a final painting. With our creative hats still on, we will then be planning and creating a final art piece linked to map work, inspired by various pieces of art. We will be collaging, sketching and selecting the appropriate materials, producing our own interpretation of a map. We will also be using ICT to support our learning, and as historians, we will be downloading and finding historical maps of various locations.
