Letter from the Director of Music and the Arts - 23rd June 2016

In my last newsletter for the year I have looked at all three departments as a whole and pulled together our overall thoughts on this year’s work and achievements.

  • B&TB
  • Juilliard
  • Art
  • Stage and Screen
  • Stage and Screen

This year has seen us embrace the new collaboration with Juilliard and all the exciting developments that it brings to the school. To see all the pupils work with these fine musicians throughout the year has been amazing; from the very young and inexperienced to the older and much more experienced, all pupils have gained so much. Outside of the classroom, I have been so pleased with the development of the choirs and the school orchestra and I hope to build on this during the next academic year. One of the highlights this year was the school musical, Beauty and the Beast, where we saw all the Arts work together in staging such a fantastic show. The DVD download will be available very soon...keep an eye on your emails for details.

It has been a fantastic year in the Art department; new skills have been taught and new media explored with outstanding and creative outcomes. In addition to the excellent Year 7-9 Art work that has been produced, students in Years 10-13 have really begun to embrace the IGCSE and IB fine art courses with some truly ambitious and original pieces being created. In addition to the outstanding work produced during lessons, the school has seen a variety of successes in various prestigious external art competitions; this is an area we in the Art Department intend to develop further next year.

It has been an interesting year in Drama with students exploring the craft of the theatre. Students have explored a range of styles from practitioners around the world including Italy, Germany and Russia. I have been astounded by the progress that our students have made and I have enjoyed all their practical performance pieces, from the Year 9 Sweeney Todd Musical pieces to the Year 8 Physical Theatre pieces and let’s not forget the talented Year 7 Haunted House performance. Everyone should be very proud of what they have accomplished in drama and it will be exciting to see what they can accomplish next year.
