English
As we continue our Topic of ‘Brainwaves’, our English is linked to the ideas of Carol Dweck regarding ‘growth’ and ‘fixed’ mindsets. We will be exploring Peter Reynolds ‘The Dot’ and K.J. Walton’s ‘I can’t do this’, both of which embrace the ideas of challenge and resilience in learning. Using these texts, we will be exploring features common in narrative and non-narrative writing, such as building cohesion in our writing through signposts and text organisation, and building on our Year 4 understanding of adverbials. Finally, we will use some drama to bring characters and events to life, with the outcome of animating our own writing.
Maths
As we move into our final week of Mathematics before moving into our new maths sets, we will continue our focus on place value. We will be ordering numbers and rounding numbers between 0 and 1,000,000, and also looking at decimals between 0 and 1. We will be writing decimal numbers, and working on our understanding of the number system and place value. This will involve some fun collaborative work, and will allow us the chance to develop our peer and self-assessment skills. Finally, we will begin to look at different units of metric measure, and how we convert between these.
Topic
Next week we will continue and complete our topic of ‘Brainwaves’. We will be exploring learner types, and building on our understanding of mindsets. Exploring the many functions of our memory, we will be trialling memory games, tricks and techniques. Furthermore, we will discover the idea of ‘fight or flight’ and look at how developing strategies for keeping calm can enable us to be better learners. Linked to this, we will explore the concept of ‘Mindfulness’, and look at strategies for keeping calm. Finally, we will look at our role as internationally minded citizens, including a creative collaging lesson and a strategic focus on global activism as we design our own action plans for a charity.
