Middle Leaders’ Programme

23 九月 2016

by Michael Watson, Head of English

Being part of the Middle Leaders’ Programme, run by Nord Anglia University, is a great opportunity to get together with other like-minded professionals and ask some of the hard questions about our roles as leaders in various parts of the company in China.  The course sees leadership skills and effectiveness as keys to unlocking student potential and so the course is centred on how leadership can raise student achievement and opportunity.

Since the last residential meeting, held at NAIS Pudong, we have been busily getting involved in a range of thinking activities including interviewing current leaders about their preferred styles and some of the challenges that leaders face day-to-day and also making action plans based on our own aims within our particular fields.  The major piece of work completed between last January and September is the research project which seeks to bring a school issue to the table for close inspection and critical reflection.  I have chosen to look at assessment and in particular the idea of comparative judgement as opposed to marking rubrics.  It has been an interesting voyage of discovery and the research and small-scale findings have led me to believe that perhaps assessment and the way schools approach assessment needs to be looked at quite closely, the world over, for the next few years.  Having the chance to discuss my finding and debate disagreements allowed me to really critically address the issues and also to have some of my ideas thoroughly tested. One thing that the course have revealed is the ever-changing nature of leadership and the massive challenges any leader faces day-to-day.  I would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone wishing to learn deeply about these issues; it was a fantastic few days.
