An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

Information and Reminders

  • Thank you to all parents who attended the Academic Review Evenings. We hope the information provided was useful in helping you to support your child at home and inform you of their next steps;
  • On Thursday 26th January there will be no CCAs, this is to allow students and families to get home safely, as we are aware the traffic could be quite chaotic;
  • We are looking forward to the Chinese New Year Temple Fair on Sunday and hope to see many of you there!
  • Please ensure your child has a warm coat to go outside in the colder weather;
  • We will be hosting our Exit Point in the week after Chinese New Year holidays – we will confirm the date and time on Class Dojo.

In English next week we will begin preparation for our Exit Point which will take place after the Chinese New Year holidays. We will be allocating speaking parts to the children and discussing the skills needed to present information to an audience; including our use of voice and intonation. With the children we will plan how we might perform on stage to ensure we are engaging, but that we also speak with clarity so that our audience understands what we are saying.



This week we have begun to explore the relationships between fractions, decimals and percentages. To ensure deeper understanding of these concepts we will be continuing to look at equivalent fractions; turning fractions into decimals and vice versa; plus understanding the meaning of percentages. During the start of next week’s maths lessons we will also be focusing on the vocabulary used with multiples and factors of numbers.



In topic, the children will be finishing their Roman shields and they will practice Roman military formations. They will then investigate the legacy the Romans have left and why the Roman Empire collapsed. The children will then compare Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome by investigating similarities and differences between these 2 great civilizations. We will also be looking at the influence the Greco-Romano’s have had on the modern world.
