Information and Reminders
Congratulations to 6A who were the first winners of our Primary Challenge. They set the standard for 6B and 6C to follow, by entering the building in a consistently calm and orderly manner after break and lunch time. This is what we expect to see from all students, in order to start our lessons on time and in the right way.
Thanks to all parents who attended the mathematics calculation workshop with Mr. Scrymgeour. Arithmetic is a big component of the subject, and it’s important that students know how to present their work systematically in order to minimise careless errors. With SATs approaching in a few months, it’s also worth noting that students can gain a few relief marks for incorrect answers, provided they use a formal method.
If you haven’t already, we would really appreciate you taking the time to complete our Parent Satisfaction Survey by following this link: http://parentsurvey.nordanglia.com/survey/selfserve/5a0/160104?wave=y2017

English
In English, we will continue looking at formal writing types, like letters, instructions, and speeches. We’ll be conducting a writing assessment which will be a formal letter to the Head Teacher, requesting a change to something in school. Students will be expected to use formal language, correct presentation and layout, and correct grammar. Guided reading will continue with our two texts ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ and ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. Our SPAG topic will be antonyms.
Maths
In maths, we move our focus back to calculation, which is an important area of learning for the SATs. Students recently practised an arithmetic paper, which was extremely revealing for the teachers and will help guide our future lessons to address gaps in the children’s understanding. There is a particular need to strengthen the students’ knowledge of calculating with fractions. For example, problems like ‘two fifths divided by two’ and ‘one third add one tenth’ caused particular problems across the year group.
Topic
We will continue our Topic unit which is called ‘Out of Africa’, based on the theory of evolution and inheritance. Students will be learning about food web and food chains, and will start to consider human evolution, as we look back at evidence of our ancestry and connection to other primates. We will later start to look at the topic through the lens of art, as we produce diagrams to represent the connections between different organisms.
