Year 5 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

  • Fabulous Year 5

Information and Reminders

School photos – Next week we will be having individual and class photos during the school day. Please can all children be dressed in the correct winter uniform for their photographs. For consistency, girls should wear either black tights or black socks for their photograph.

5A – Tuesday 21st March

5B – Monday 20th March

Drop Everything and Read – Students will need to bring a book to school every day next week, which they will take with them to every lesson. On hearing a bell or whistle, they must stop what they are doing and pick up the book and read.

Book Swap – If you have any unwanted books at home that you are willing to donate, you may bring them into school and your child can swap them for another book on Thursday or Friday of next week.

Book Fair – we will have external vendors in school from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th March selling a range of books. Students will have an opportunity to make a wish list of books they like, which they can bring home to show you, before purchasing any.

An update on Ms. Preston’s return to school – Ms. Preston will be returning to school on Monday 10th April, which coincides with the start of the summer term. This is slightly later than we initially anticipated, therefore we wanted to make you aware.

Stars of the Week

5A – Alexandre - for excellent work in maths

5B – Salma – for increasing the amount of work she produces in lessons

In English, we will be studying ‘A Much Ado About Nothing’, one of Shakespeare’s comedies. We will be using a children’s version of the story to understand the characters and the plot. Whilst learning the story, we will discuss and complete work on the themes of the story; friendship and deception, and relate them to our own experiences. During the week, we will re-enact scenes from the play and one group of students will be selected to perform in our Friday assembly.

Instead of spelling this week, we will have fun looking at some of the words Shakespeare used in his writing and figuring out what they mean in modern day English.

In Maths we are continuing to look at calculating area and perimeter through problem solving. This is giving the children really good practice of their multiplication and division skills. We spend the second half of the week calculating capacity and volume using worded problem and practical challenges.

In topic, we will be exploring tourist locations in China in which tourists would want to visit. The children also be utilising their map skills by creating a sightseeing map for a visitor to Shanghai. Towards the end of the week, we will be analysing pictures of the Bund, investigating how this area of Shanghai has changed over time.
