Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the first week back after the holidays

  • Year 6 Carnival Exit Point

Information and Reminders

Well done to all students who contributed to the fantastic Fairgrounds exit point, which was enjoyed by students from Years 1, 2, 4 and 5 on Thursday 30th March. Year 6 children showed their maturity and independence by operating their own carnival games based upon probability and skill. Players were able to win tokens which they later exchanged for prizes like stationery and popcorn.

The games were hugely popular, including the ‘Guess the Beads in the Jar’ challenge which drew over 80 guesses from across the school. Charlotte McCullough won the main prize of a table tennis set, with a precise guess of 2060 beads. Great estimation - congratulations!

Through the students’ hard work we raised over 1500RMB which will be donated to a local charity in relation to our Global Goals project, which aims to tackle hunger and promote good health.

We have a number of parent workshops scheduled for the summer term. You can find out more about these in your child’s Term 2 Report, which will come home today.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!

In English, we will begin a unit of work around the courtroom as we learn about the roles and responsibilities during mock trials. Students will learn to create a case of evidence, then present the case convincingly to a jury. We aim to allow students opportunities for public speaking and teamwork in a formal setting. In the first week, we will learn about the different jobs of professionals who work in a courtroom, and role-play the Trial of Harry Potter. We will continue our links with Year 1 classes by reading with the younger children in the library. Our SPAG topics are conjunctions and dashes.

In maths, we will be calculating space and volume. Students will be able to recognise shapes which have the same area but different perimeters, and vice versa. We will be able to estimate the volume of cubes and cuboids, and calculate the volume thereafter. Students will also know a range of formulae to calculate these values. One common error we would like to avoid is using the sloping height when calculating the areas of parallelograms and triangles.

We will start our new Topic unit, ‘What a Wonderful World’, which is a geography-themed programme of study. In Geography, we’ll be finding out about different regions and environments around the world, and how to use different types of maps to find out information. We will also explore the forces and processes that shape our planet, and about extreme weather events.
