Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 learn about forms of government

Information and Reminders

Our SATs begin on Monday, with a test each morning of the week:

Monday - English paper 1 (Reading) at 9.20am

Tuesday - Grammar & Punctuation at 8.50am; Spelling at 10.50am

Wednesday - Maths paper 1 (Arithmetic) at 9.50am

Thursday - Maths paper 2 (Reasoning) at 9.35am

Friday - Maths paper 3 (Reasoning) at 9am

We have chosen to space out the tests to avoid fatigue and give students chance to demonstrate their best work. Normal specialist lessons will be mostly unaffected. I would like to reiterate that these are not pass/fail tests, and have no bearing on the subsequent progress into Year 7. They are a chance for the school to measure the success of our students against international standards. The results are used to help the school make decisions about our curriculum.

At an individual level, they represent a good practice of the demands of formal examinations. I don’t believe in saying ‘good luck’, since luck depends on preparation – so my message to students is: do your very best, and we’ll all be proud of you.

Practice for the KS2 production ‘Porridge’ is increasing; with all year groups coming together to rehearse as we approach the performance dates on the 14th and 15th of June.

In English, we will continue to study the George Orwell classic ‘Animal Farm’, which is proving to be an excellent companion to our new Topic unit about governments and rulers. Students will analyse the development of the pigs’ leadership and consider the impact of their decisions upon others within the story. Students will also learn to predict the future events by applying their knowledge of characters. In our final SPAG lesson we will review content based on the students’ preferences.

In mathematics, we will conduct some light practice in arithmetic and reasoning to keep students’ brains in gear before the tests begin. We are very confident in our students’ understanding of the Primary curriculum, so we anticipate some very high scores. Students have also requested to revisit percentages, fractions and volume to consolidate their learning.

We will continue our final Topic ‘Champions for Change’, which is based upon governments and leadership. We will study governmental structures from around the world, and look at how rulers come to power. The UK election on 8th June provides a perfect real-life case study of an election campaign in action. We will give students chance to see the results come in live, and use their knowledge to predict the outcome.
