Message from Primary

12 十月 2018

Dear Parents

This week I am proud to announce that we no longer use plastic water bottles in the Mini-Hub. We instead have re-usable cups that can be filled from newly installed filtered water machines. This has been the achievement of the Primary School Council after being inspired by a group of IB students who delivered an excellent assembly on plastics and is the first of many steps towards reducing our plastic usage as a school. This is a good example of our ambitious students receiving a very clear message from older students about the important action needed on reducing plastic usage and then working with us as a school to make it happen. Communication with our students is so important, as they respond so well to issues and have an understanding of the world that is developing all the time.

This week in my assembly I highlighted the concept of mindfulness as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. Mindfulness is about focusing on the moment and avoiding potential stress and worry about what possibly might happen, or what has in the past. I looked at strategies that will help them to avoid unnecessary worry about things that they cannot do anything about. One of the strategies was to talk to a parent or trusted adult, as again communication is so important.

Teachers have a great opportunity to communicate with you as parents next week when we have our Primary Academic Review Evenings. On Tuesday and Thursday, you are able to book an appointment with your child’s teacher and discuss their progress since the beginning of the year. These are such a vital part of the home-school communication relationship, that I do hope you take the opportunity to come and spend time with your child’s teachers, please email your class teacher if you are unsure of how to book an appointment.

In the modern world, we depend more and more upon virtual communication through social media and this week the Primary Leadership Team have been taking a more active part in communicating the amazing things that are happening in our school via Facebook and Instagram. Please do take the opportunity to follow our school on these platforms as some of the stories that you can find out about are fantastic – be it Year 1 working in the Secondary science laboratories or Year 4’s trip to the Jaguar Land Rover Plant as part of their current topic.  All of this is in addition to your child’s Class Dojo page, which are hugely popular with parents with our posts receiving over a thousand views and likes each week. We are ambitious to be even better at communication, so we are always happy to receive feedback on how this can improve.

Sunday is our End of Summer Picnic and I do hope that sees many of you there for this relaxed afternoon of outside fun, we do hope the weather is good.

As the weather is turning a little cooler, please can I remind you that we would like all students in their winter uniform by the 1st November and that students should be following the uniform guidelines. Black shoes and the correct colour tights or socks are an important part of the school uniform, so please do check your child’s Student Planner for guidance.

Please do have a great weekend and I hope to see you on Sunday for the picnic.
