Martin has been involved in teaching for almost 20 years – having started off in the world of TESOL and has been fortunate enough to have worked in several countries including the UK, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, UAE and for a year back in 2001/2, in China. He trained as a Spanish teacher but also teaches French and has experience teaching from Y4 up to Y13. He has been a Head of Department for 7 years and also has had 2 years’ experience as a member of SLT as an Associate Assistant Principal. His career aspirations are to eventually become a Principal and to assist in this, as well as to become a more effective Head of Department, he has undergone PENTA school inspection training Levels 1 and 2 and the Nord Anglia Middle Leaders Programme. Martin feels privileged to work with such a talented group of colleagues and such an amazing and diverse student body and as such, he strives to keep learning, keep listening and be the best leader and teacher possible.
Martin considers China to be a fascinating country, and as a linguist, he fully understands and appreciates the opportunity to learn the most widely spoken language in the world both for himself and for his children. Martin is in the fortunate position to work closely with the Mandarin teachers and as such is always looking to learn as much as possible about China and its culture from them.
Martin feels very lucky to have an amazing family with a beautiful, talented wife, two wonderful children and a lovely dog. His family’s happiness is very important to him and they love living in Shanghai and exploring what the city has to offer. In their free time, they love to travel and visit new cities and countries as well as try new foods and experience local customs. He is a keen (albeit not too talented) sportsman who loves football, squash and badminton and aspires to get in better shape during his time in Shanghai. He is also a mad Liverpool FC fan and watches as many games as he can taking into consideration the time difference!
