iPads and Learning

I like to be invited to classes and find out what the children have being learning and last week I was able to see iPads in action in the classroom. 

I had a special invitation to visit 3B and found myself yet again in the position of being a learner like the children. It was quite scary! My invitation was to take part in a Kahoot quiz on an iPad that the children had written to test my knowledge about Alexander Fleming. He was the scientist the children had chosen to research about during Science week. I had to study hard beforehand!

I was so impressed by my visit on many counts. Firstly, I was amazed at the extensive knowledge the children had found out about during the research process. They were all mini-experts and could speak with confidence about Alexander Fleming, his life and his wonderful discovery that led to antibiotics being part of our routine health care today. Furthermore, they retained all the facts and information and could recall them at speed as part of the challenge of the Kahoot quiz. As part of their Literacy learning, they had created sophisticated well expressed questions and also considered carefully the choice of answers, most of which were designed to trick the contestants into giving the wrong answers. No one could fail to be impressed with their skills with technology in not only using the iPads to take part in the quiz, but more impressively creating the quiz in the first place using the Kahoot app.

At times parents can be concerned about the amount of time children spend using technology and rightly so. It is an area of children’s lives that should be monitored carefully for many reasons.  However, 3B demonstrated how effectively iPads can be used to enhance children’s learning purposefully in the classroom. They allowed the children to research an area of interest, create their own assessment and then complete it in a way that motivated them, as was apparent by the enthusiasm they demonstrated. And of course they also learned the technological skills necessary to bring all this about – and teach them to me!

At BISS Puxi we consider carefully the use of technology in the classroom, making sure that it adds to the learning experience in just the way 3B demonstrated last week. This generation of children are so lucky to have access to such creative and exciting ways to learn. I really recommend you look at the Kahoot app and support your child in using it at home.

A big thank you to 3B for the invitation and showing me how clever they are; and a special mention to Harrison and Carla my partners in completing the quiz, who patiently taught me what I needed to do. Didn’t we do well?
