OUR EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM

At our international kindergarten in São Paulo, children follow the English National Curriculum, known as the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Our international early years curriculum specialists deliver play-based learning in a warm and nurturing environment, which fosters understanding, critical thinking, and enthusiasm. This ensures our children meet the seven EYFS learning milestones.

TEACHING AND LEARNING AT OUR INTERNATIONAL KINDERGARTEN

The British College of Brazil delivers a modern and innovative international early years education, which is rich in traditional values.
Teaching and learning at our international kindergarten in São Paulo are based around three principles:
  • Stimulating curiosity and nurturing an interest in learning.
  • Thinking critically and taking a structured approach to understanding and solving problems.
  • Having an open mind and respect for other people and new ideas.

OUR EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM APPROACH

The British College of Brazil’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum is underpinned by these three principles. They inspire our teachers to deliver interactive and thought-provoking lessons that stimulate and engage our children.

Lessons are planned to suit a range of abilities so that every student can improve their skills and knowledge. We encourage each child to actively participate, too. Assistant Teachers work alongside our international early years curriculum experts in each year group, which gives our lead teachers the time and space to provide specialist attention and monitor progress.

We strive to create an environment where our international kindergarten children feel at home and are excited to explore new concepts. We encourage self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, and respect for others. Our classroom walls have many displays of the children’s arts and crafts, as well as language-based information that encourage their literacy skills. Our displays and ever-changing role-play area further stimulate our students’ enthusiasm.

THE SEVEN EYFS AREAS OF LEARNING

The British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of the English National Curriculum includes the following areas of learning:
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development.
  • Communication and Language.
  • Physical Development.
  • Literacy.
  • Mathematics.
  • Understanding the World.
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM SUBJECTS

In mathematics lessons, we introduce our children to core concepts. Our young learners participate in practical activities, using and understanding simple mathematical language.

We help our students to build their communication, language, and literacy skills, too, through interactive speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities.

Our children also acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of their environment, other people, and features of the natural and man-made world. Their personal and social development focuses on how to work, play, cooperate with others, and function in a group beyond the family.

Our physical development programme, meanwhile, helps our international kindergarten children to develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space, and manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environments. We encourage positive attitudes towards a healthy and active way of life. We also give our students opportunities to be creative, through art, craft, role-play, and music.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Our activities are always linked to themes, as we begin to explore our huge world. Our teachers will even take us outside or show us a new place, where we might get to munch on snacks or jump into swimming lessons with friends.

TALKING AND LISTENING
We come together at midday to eat our nutritious lunches while having meaningful conversations with our teachers, TAs, and peers. We listen to different stories, use our vocabulary, and have lots of laughs that make our bonds stronger.

CONNECTING WITH OUR BODIES
Just like a battery-recharge, nap time allows us to connect with our bodies after refuelling, as we relax in our comfortable classroom. Our teachers and Tas know how to make the lighting and breezy airflow just right for a snooze.
