A fortnight of acts of remembrance closed today with a powerful online assembly at BIS Hanoi. Planned by history teachers, Victoria Black and Sophie Peters, and recorded and performed by students, the assembly was extraordinary in its depth and quality.

The start of this academic year has been a busy one in the Performing Arts department, with Dance, Drama, Theatre Studies and Music lessons being delivered to students across our entire age range; from Foundation Stage Music through to Year 13 IB Theatre Studies.

Our new caterers, Joma bakery, launched an exciting range of products. Their school dining service is based on a commitment to providing a healthy and balanced meal for all students.

Tuesday night was a joyous occasion for our Year 12 students at BIS Hanoi. In the middle of the first term of studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, BIS Hanoi students, with their families, paused for breath, posed for a photograph and reflected on their academic achievements over the last two years.

Global Campus (GC) Junior is a dedicated area on Nord Anglia’s Global Campus for children Under 8 years old. There are four different sections in GC Junior for you and your child to explore and complete activities and projects at home. Some of these resources and activities are also used by our teachers in school.

This term, Year 6 have been working on completing their entries for the first of this year’s MIT Challenges. The challenge requires students to design something to help astronauts eat, play sport, or do exercise more easily when they are in space. The lack of gravity in space means that eating a bowl of noodles is almost impossible, the soup and the noodles would be floating all over the space craft.

On Thursday, BIS Hanoi’s IB Options Evening was superbly attended by Year 11 students and their parents. The event was an insightful occasion for us to support students and parents in gathering all the useful information about IB subjects. On Friday 30th October, your child will have the privilege of wearing a Halloween outfit on the day in return for a charitable donation. We have already suggested 30,000 VND as a donation but any further donations are much needed and would be much appreciated by those affected.

At BIS Hanoi, we are very lucky to have a unique collaboration with MIT, the world's leading technology University. This term has seen MIT launched their “Into the Void” challenges, focused around Space exploration. These challenges are a great way to get our students interested in the world of STEAM and see how what they design and make today can influence the world of tomorrow.

At BIS Hanoi, on-going formative assessment of our children’s learning happens every day and in every lesson. Through this daily assessment, our teachers are able to plan and pitch their lessons to all of the children’s different abilities and stages of learning. By assessing this way, the teachers understand what the children know already and what their next steps in learning should be.

If there is something that we have all learnt from 2020 so far, it is that there is a need as individuals to be able to respond and adapt to a rapidly changing context. We in fact know, that this isn’t exclusive to periods of global pandemics, but that world-wide we are in a period of time where technological development is moving forward at a rapid pace. Known as the Information Age. Throughout this period of significant change, we rely on skills such as inquiry across a growing number of sources, reflection on our own personal journey and ultimately, care for both ourselves, others in our community and our planet.

Nord Anglia’s Global Campus has experienced a new re-design over the summer holidays and is now bigger and better than ever. This week at BIS Hanoi, we re-launched the Global Campus with our children during our phase assemblies. Children and families from F1 – Y13 can access Global Campus.

Mid-Autumn festival is one of the biggest celebrations in Vietnam and is called ‘Tet Trung thu’. Children love this colourful time with bright decorations and fun activities. At BIS Hanoi, we celebrate Moon festival as a way of honoring our host country; students and teachers eagerly await exciting performances and wear Ao Dai to school. BIS Hanoi Secondary School is proud to be adopting VIA Character Strengths into both our Pastoral and Academic programs this year. VIA strengths highlights 24 character strengths that across cultures, nationalities and religions we can all agree make up what is best in human beings.

Prior to the students returning to school, the teachers worked in year group teams to review and update the unit themes, ensuring they are relevant and exciting for our students at BIS Hanoi.
