This week we have been lucky enough to have been visited by Paul Murphy, our Juilliard Curriculum Mentor. This is now Paul’s fifth visit to BIS HCMC where he has met many of our staff and students.
During this visit Paul has been busy working with all the music staff and also many of our students.
In the Secondary Campus, he worked with two Year 8 classes focusing on the music of Ligeti from the Juilliard Core Curriculum and also with a Year 9 class focusing on improvisation using the Blues.
His visit included a tour of the new campus and also a chance to work with Ms Beamont for the first time. With Year 4, Paul and Ms Beth led a particularly enjoyable class in which the children explored musical symbols, and also listened to some unusual sounds and playing techniques from an ancient Chinese instrument called the ‘pipa’.
The Secondary staff were also given an introduction into the ethos behind Juilliard. This included activities based around the idea of reflection. Here he focused on cello music by Bach asking the whole staff to carry out various thought-provoking activities and reflections.
Music can play a transformational role in children's education. The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme has been designed to give students a deep engagement with performing arts - promoting cultural literacy, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration.

With over 1,200 students, staff, and parents participating in the 5km run or walk, the event was a true reflection of the school’s commitment to fostering a strong sense of community.
At BIS HCMC, our Primary Expeditions are more than just school trips—they are life-changing expeditions that shape our students into confident, independent individuals. Earlier this month, our Year 4, 5, and 6 students embarked on thrilling journeys to Long Hai, Can Gio, and Cat Tien.
What do you do when you have school uniforms that are now too small, or you no longer need them, but you don’t want to simply throw them away? For BIS HCMC parents, Bibi, Margot, and Ying, this dilemma sparked an inspiring solution—the Parent Uniform Upcycling Team.
