Building Confidence through Collaboration
The opportunity for BIS students to engage with children from Huỳnh Văn Ngỡi Primary Government School through this weekly club activity has been tremendously rewarding over the years, with a strong collaborative bond developing between the two schools. - Ms Zahraoui, CCA supervisor
So far this term BIS Students have worked closely with the children in preparing them for an inter-school acting competition and helping them to rehearse for the big day.
Abhinav Singh, a student-leader of the club reflects on his experience:
"The first week of teaching at the Huỳnh Văn Ngỡi school was a fantastic beginning to a new journey and experience for us all. The BIS students had been briefed in advance and had prepared numerous activities to help with introductions and getting to know the Vietnamese children we would be working with.
At first, the children were quite shy but as we worked through the activities they slowly began to open up and it was a great feeling being able to see them engaging with the material. Our first activity involved the students writing out their names and ages in English and we then moved on to learning different sports through an exercise of matching up a picture of a sport with its corresponding name. This was a tremendous success, with the students showing a lot of interest in the topic, which helped to boost our confidence as teachers.
Recently the children have been preparing for an acting competition and we were privileged to be able to support them with this in a small way. We printed out scripts from parts of stories such as the Lion King and, over the past few weeks, have been rehearsing with, and coaching the children on how to use body language and to speak confidently to an audience. They have worked very hard and it is rewarding to see the outcomes.
I have learned so much through this experience and I am appreciative for the guidance offered by the CCA supervisor, Ms Zahraoui as well as the diligence and attention the Huỳnh Văn Ngỡi children display in their lessons. I look forward to continuing this journey next term."
