On Friday 25 September we celebrated the European Day of Languages 2020. This year our focus at BISS Puxi was on Italian!

By Dr Alexander Cattell, Head of Modern Languages

The day began with an assembly on the Italian language and Italian culture for Years 7 to 9. Asia Carra and Mattia Magni from Year 10 gave a speech in Italian about the aspects of Italian culture and the places in Italy that they love the most. Meanwhile, students in Years 10 to 13 participated in a form-time quiz to see how much they knew about Italy and its language and culture.

In their MFL lessons, students in Years 7 to 9 had the opportunity to learn how to introduce themselves and to count to 20 in Italian. Some classes were even lucky enough to be taught by some of our native Italian students: Marta Del Giudice and Sofia and Camilla Osto.

In their Art lessons, Years 8 and 9 learned about Italian street art; Year 10 Drama students studied the Italian theatrical form Commedia dell’arte; while Year 9 History students learned about the history of the Italian language.

At lunchtime, students enjoyed pizza and pasta in the dining room, Asia Carra performed two of the most famous Italian songs: O sole mio and Volare, and trailers of some Italian classics were screened in the cinema.

Buona giornata europea delle lingue!

Happy European Day of Languages!
