Could you tell us what brought you to Shanghai?
Our family came from Korea. Logan’s father moved to China first after transferring to a Chinese company, and we followed about two years later—after COVID-19 stabilized—finally relocating to Shanghai in January of last year.
How did you learn about BISS, and what made you decide to apply?
BISS is such a well-known school that we naturally became aware of it. In addition to BISS, we toured several international schools near Qingpu with our child, but in the end, Logan chose BISS. I think the school’s diverse facilities and programs sparked his interest. We also believed it was an environment where Logan could seek out opportunities on his own, and above all, we wanted him to feel secure and adapt well to school life. So, we fully supported his choice.
From your initial inquiry to Logan’s first day, how did BISS support your child and family?
Actually, our sudden decision to move to Shanghai left us with a very tight schedule. Fortunately, BISS had Ms. Jenny, who specializes in Korean admissions, so the process went smoothly without delays, and Logan was able to start school as planned.
Are you involved in any parent activities? If so, could you share your experience?
Since neither my husband nor I had prior experience with international schools abroad, we were very curious about BISS from the start. So, I began by joining the morning fitness program for parents, and then made sure not to miss the New Parents Coffee Mornings and Outings every month. Through these, I learned more about Shanghai and BISS while forming friendships with parents of different nationalities and ages. This made me more eager to participate in school events and programs. Eventually, I joined the New Parents Team and the Lions Event Team to encourage other Korean parents to get involved, contributing in my own small way.
When you ask your child about school, how does he usually respond?
Logan absolutely loves BISS. Even when we, as parents, have concerns, he reassures us like a little ambassador for the school. We can clearly see that Logan is healthier and happier at BISS than ever before. The teachers and friends he’s met here will surely remain precious memories for him.
What do you think makes BISS special?
I believe it’s the diversity of the students and parents. The cultural exposure children gain in an environment that respects diversity is something that can never be artificially replicated. Though our time here has been short, I look forward to seeing how this experience will shape Logan in the future, and I hope these connections will one day reunite on a global stage.
If another family was considering enrolling their child at BISS, would you recommend it? What would be your reasons?
One of the things we valued most about BISS when deciding on Logan’s enrollment was the school’s commitment to providing equal educational opportunities to all prospective students. Initially, we worried about potential gaps between students and even felt anxious about Logan’s own shortcomings. But in the end, with the teachers’ support and encouragement, he has grown step by step with sincerity. We believe that a child’s emotional well-being at school is the foundation for their future growth. If other families share this belief, I would wholeheartedly recommend BISS.
1.상하이에 오게 된 계기에 대해 말씀해 주세요.
저희 가족은 한국에서 왔습니다. Logan의 아빠가 중국 회사로 이직하면서 먼저 중국에 왔고, 저희는 그로부터 약 2년 후에, 그러니까 COVID가 안정화되고 난 이후에서야, 작년 1월에 상하이로 이주해 올 수 있었습니다.
2.BISS에 대해 어떻게 알게 되었고, 지원하게 된 이유는 무엇인가요?
BISS는 워낙 잘 알려진 학교이기 때문에 자연스럽게 알게 되었습니다. BISS외에도 칭푸 인근 지역의 몇몇 국제학교를 아이와 함께 투어했었는데, 결과적으로 Logan이 BISS를 선택했습니다. 아마 BISS에 갖춰져 있는 다양한 시설과 프로그램이 아이의 흥미를 자극했던 것 같습니다. 저희도 Logan이 스스로 기회를 찾아나갈 수 있는 환경이라고 판단했고, 무엇보다 아이가 안정감을 갖고 학교 생활에 잘 적응하는 것이 가장 중요했기 때문에, 아이의 선택과 의견을 지지했습니다.
3.첫 문의부터 첫 등교까지 BISS는 자녀와 가족을 어떻게 지원해 주었나요?
사실 갑자기 상해로 이주를 결정하는 바람에 일정이 많이 촉박했어요. 다행히 BISS에 한국인 입학을 전담하시는 Jenny 선생님이 계셔서 지체되는 상황없이 절차를 진행할 수 있었고, 계획한 일정대로 무사히 첫 등교를 할 수 있었습니다.
4.참여하고 있는 학부모 활동이 있다면 이야기해 주세요.
저희 부부 모두 해외 국제학교에 대한 경험이 없기 때문에 처음부터 BISS에 대한 궁금증과 호기심이 많았던 것 같아요. 그래서 아침마다 학부모를 위한 운동 프로그램에 참여하는 것을 시작으로 New Parents를 위한 Coffee Morning과 Outing에 매달 빠짐없이 참여하려 노력했습니다. 그 과정에서 상하이라는 도시와 BISS에 대해 더 알아가고, 국적과 나이를 떠나 여러 부모님들과 우정을 쌓을 수 있었습니다. 그래서 학교에서 개최하는 다양한 이벤트와 프로그램에도 애정을 갖고 참여할 수 있었던 것 같아요. 언젠가부터는 다른 한국 학부모님들의 참여를 독려하고자 New Parents Team과 Lions Event Team에 합류해서 미약하게나마 힘을 보태왔습니다.
5.자녀에게 학교에 대해 물어보면 보통 어떤 반응을 보이나요?
Logan은 BISS를 아주 많이 사랑해요. 가끔 부모로서 가질 수 있는 우려에도 Logan은 학교 대변인으로서 저희를 안심시키려 노력하죠. 로건이 BISS에서 그 어느 때보다도 건강하고 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 것을 너무나 잘 알고 있습니다. 그 시간을 함께한 선생님들과 친구들 모두 Logan에게 소중한 추억으로 남을거에요.
6. BISS가 특별한 이유는 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?
다양한 국적의 아이들과 부모님들이라고 생각합니다. 다양성을 존중하는 환경 속에서 아이들이 경험하는 문화적 수준은 결코 인위적으로 학습할 수 없는 부분이라고 생각합니다. 비록 짧은 시간이었지만, BISS에서의 경험이 훗날 Logan에게 어떤 변화로 다가올지 기대가 되고, 이 인연이 언젠가 세계 무대에서 다시 이어지길 바랍니다.
7.만약 어떤 가족이 자녀를 BISS에 입학시키려고 한다면, 추천 하시겠어요? 무엇을 이유로 추천하시겠어요?
Logan의 입학을 결정할 당시 부모 입장에서 BISS를 높게 평가한 것 중의 하나는, 입학을 희망하는 학생들에게 동등한 교육의 기회를 제공한다는 학교의 가치관이었습니다. 한편으로는 혹시모를 아이들 간의 격차를 걱정했었고 제 아이의 부족한 부분에 대해 조바심도 있었지만, 결과적으로 Logan은 선생님들의 지지와 격려 속에서 성실하게 한 발 한 발 성장해왔다고 생각합니다. 저희는 학교에서 아이가 느끼는 감정이 튼튼해야 그 자신감을 기반으로 훗날 크게 성장할 수 있다고 믿습니다. 이러한 저희의 생각에 동의한다면 기꺼이 BISS를 추천할 것입니다.
