BSB SANLITUN KEY STAGE 1 CURRICULUM

At our British Primary School in Sanlitun, our Years 1 and 2 children follow the National Curriculum for England. Building on the skills introduced in the Early Years, our Key Stage 1 students develop in maturity and experience more formal methods of learning. Our teachers take a skills-based approach, which enables our children to develop their social, cultural, and academic understanding.

OUR APPROACH TO KEY STAGE 1

At BSB Sanlitun British Primary School, Chaoyang District, we encourage our Key Stage 1 students to be academically inquisitive, naturally curious, and endlessly creative.

Our diverse National Curriculum for England opens the door to a more structured phase of their schooling, as they build strong foundations for the future. LEARNING THROUGH THEMES AND TOPICS

Our Key Stage 1 curriculum is delivered through immersive interdisciplinary learning, where different subject areas are connected by engaging themes and topics. For example, learning about transport involves not only reading stories, but also examining wheel mechanisms, studying the history of transport, and learning to read maps. This approach encourages our children to think creatively and solve problems. Learning in this way also increases engagement.

DEVELOPING CORE SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE

BSB Sanlitun’s Key Stage 1 curriculum involves a cross-curricular approach, which encompasses literacy, science, maths, humanities, ICT, and design and technology.

At our private Primary School in Sanlitun, Chaoyang District, we teach literacy through units of study, with students learning about fiction, non-fiction, and poetry through reading, writing, grammar, phonics, and spelling. Children continue to learn the mechanics of reading while developing a deeper understanding of texts through role-play, retelling, and asking and answering questions.

Maths is taught by using a balance of practical and recorded activities. Our Key Stage 1 curriculum students learn about numbers, shapes, space, measurements, and data handling. The emphasis on deepening a child’s comprehension of numbers helps them to gradually move away from practical counting apparatus. We also encourage our children to understand the relevance of numbers in everyday life through problem-solving.

In science, our students learn about living processes, materials, plants, animals, and more. They hypothesise and test their ideas using practical and brainstorming sessions.
