This week, our Year 1 children had an egg-citing time making delicious egg fried rice, inspired by the story The Runaway Wok and our learning about Spring Festival. The classroom was full of excitement, smiles and the wonderful smells of cooking!
First, the children talked about the story and discussed how food can travel and be shared, just like in The Runaway Wok. Next, they read a simple recipe together and learned how to follow instructions in the correct order using time connectives such as first, next, then and finally.
Then, it was time to get cooking! The children carefully used kitchen equipment such as bowls, spoons and measuring cups. They cracked eggs, stirred ingredients and mixed the rice with great focus and enthusiasm. Everyone worked together brilliantly, taking turns and helping their friends.
After that, the children watched as the egg fried rice came together, just like magic! There were lots of “oohs” and “aahs” as they saw the eggs cook and mix with the rice. Finally, the best part arrived – tasting the food they had made themselves! Many children were proud to try something new and couldn’t wait to share their thoughts.
Most importantly, the children had lots of fun learning through cooking, storytelling and celebrating Spring Festival. And it wasn’t just the children who enjoyed the experience – the Year 1 teachers had lots of fun too, laughing, cooking and joining in with the excitement!
