Building Connections: Why Social Experiences Matter

Building Connections: Why Social Experiences Matter | BSB Sanlitun - Building Connections

Children learn how to be with other people by being with other people. Every game, conversation, disagreement and shared experience gives them an opportunity to develop the social and emotional skills they need both in school and beyond.

Research into child development and resilience consistently highlights the importance of positive relationships and a sense of belonging. Through regular social experiences, children practise communication, cooperation, flexibility and emotional regulation. They learn how to wait, negotiate, cope when someone has a different idea, recover when something goes wrong and try again. These are also the skills that help children manage the everyday demands of school.

For some children, this comes easily. For others, navigating friendships, busy environments, losing a game or joining a group can feel much harder. This is where supportive, repeated experiences are particularly valuable. Resilience is not developed by never finding something difficult; it grows when children experience manageable challenges alongside supportive adults and peers.

That is the power of ‘doing something together’.

One of the best ways to develop social confidence is through a shared activity. Sport can be particularly powerful because children have a common goal and clear structure. Whether it is football, swimming, dance, martial arts, basketball or another activity, children naturally practise taking turns, communicating, following rules, working as a team and managing both success and disappointment.

And they certainly don't have to be the best player! Being part of a team, remembering to encourage someone else or returning after a difficult session can be successes in themselves.

Living in Beijing can make social opportunities look a little different. With apartment living, busy city life, weather and less access to spontaneous outdoor space, children may not always have the same opportunities to simply head outside and find other children to play with. Clubs, sports, playdates and shared family activities can therefore provide wonderful opportunities for connection.

At school, we see the benefits of these experiences every day. A child who becomes more confident joining a game is also practising how to join a group in the classroom. A child who learns to cope with losing is building their ability to manage disappointment. A child who negotiates the rules of a playground game is developing communication and flexibility.

Social skills are learnt through practice. By giving children regular, positive opportunities to connect, cooperate and sometimes work through a little difficulty, we help them build the confidence and resilience to feel that they belong.
