Year 1 Maths: Building Fluency, Confidence and Mathematical Mastery

In Year 1, our young mathematicians have been developing a strong foundation in number, calculation and shape through a carefully sequenced approach to learning. From exploring place value and number bonds within 10 to developing addition and subtraction strategies, investigating 2-D and 3-D shapes, and extending our understanding of numbers within 20, our focus has been on developing not only mathematical fluency but also a deeper understanding of how and why mathematics works.
Developing Fluency Through the CPA Approach
At the heart of our Maths teaching is the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach, which enables children to move confidently from practical exploration towards increasingly sophisticated mathematical thinking.
Children begin by using hands-on resources such as counters, cubes, ten frames, bead strings and base-ten equipment to build their understanding. They then progress to pictorial representations, including part-whole models, number tracks and number lines, before applying their knowledge through mathematical symbols and equations. This carefully structured progression ensures that children develop secure conceptual understanding rather than simply memorising procedures.

Developing Fluency Through the CPA Approach
A key feature of our lessons is our progressive Maths Missions, designed to provide appropriate challenge while supporting children at different stages of their learning.
•Build It: Children explore mathematical concepts using practical resources, developing secure foundations through hands-on investigation.
• Show It: Children represent and apply their understanding using drawings, models and mathematical strategies, making connections between different representations.
•Prove It: Children deepen their reasoning by explaining their thinking, justifying their answers, identifying misconceptions and tackling increasingly challenging problems.
These missions allow us to respond to children's individual starting points, providing additional support where needed while extending those who are ready to think more deeply.

Making Maths Engaging and Purposeful
We believe that children learn mathematics most effectively when they are actively involved in the learning process. Our lessons incorporate practical investigations, collaborative challenges, mathematical discussions and purposeful games that encourage curiosity, perseverance and problem-solving.
Games also play an important role in our Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies. Through activities such as snap, spot the mistake, quick-fire questions and interactive challenges, we can assess children's understanding in real time, identify misconceptions and adapt our teaching accordingly. These opportunities also encourage children to retrieve prior knowledge, explain their strategies and develop confidence in sharing their mathematical thinking.

Nurturing Confident Mathematical Thinkers
As we continue our mathematical journey, our overarching goal is to develop children who are fluent, flexible and confident in their understanding of mathematics. We want our learners to recognise patterns, make connections, select efficient strategies and, most importantly, articulate the reasoning behind their answers.
By combining a mastery-focused curriculum with carefully scaffolded challenges, engaging practical experiences and responsive assessment, we are supporting our Year 1 children to become increasingly independent, resilient and reflective mathematicians.
