Celebrating European Day of Languages at BSKL

Observed annually on 26 September, European Day of Languages encourages language learning and cultural appreciation across Europe and beyond. At BSKL, the occasion provided an opportunity for pupils, families and staff to recognise and celebrate the many languages spoken throughout the school community.
Throughout the week, pupils participated in a variety of lunchtime activities designed to spark curiosity about different languages and cultures. One of the highlights saw a group of enthusiastic Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils step into the role of language teachers, leading workshops in Russian, Turkish, Czech, Portuguese and German for their peers.
The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) corridor quickly became a hub of activity as students attended sessions, practised new vocabulary and shared what they had learned with friends. The pupil-led workshops not only introduced participants to unfamiliar languages but also showcased the confidence, leadership and cultural knowledge of the students delivering them.
During tutor time, pupils put their language skills to the test through the school’s Favourite Word in a Foreign Language competition. Staff members submitted some of their favourite words from around the world, challenging pupils to identify both the language and meaning behind each word.
The activity encouraged students to think beyond literal translations and explore how language often reflects unique cultural ideas, traditions and ways of seeing the world.
Language learning also took centre stage in French and Spanish lessons throughout the week. Students explored fascinating aspects of language and communication, including untranslatable words, idioms and tongue twisters. Lessons extended beyond the classroom experience, with pupils also trying their hand at basic flamenco and bachata, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions connected to the languages they study.
The celebrations highlighted BSKL’s commitment to fostering global-mindedness and intercultural understanding. By encouraging pupils to engage with new languages and learn from one another, the school continues to create meaningful opportunities for students to develop a deeper appreciation of the diverse world around them.
Reflecting on the success of the week, it was clear that European Day of Languages resonated strongly across the school community. From leading workshops and solving language challenges to discovering new words and cultural traditions, pupils embraced every opportunity to broaden their horizons and celebrate the diversity that makes BSKL such a unique place to learn.
A huge congratulations to all pupils and staff who contributed to making this year’s European Day of Languages celebrations such a memorable success.
