Maths Week

Maths Week This week during Maths Week in the Primary School, we have been using the book 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental as our theme. The teachers have planned and delivered different mathematical activities for the children to work on, allowing them to talk about the maths they are learning with their peers. We ended the week with a 'Happy Feet' march dressed as penguins.

Meanwhile, Secondary School introduced years 7 and 8 to curve sketching. Designs were made with only the use of a ruler, pen, pencil and rubber, and a constraint that had to be followed. This enabled students to understand that curves can be made of infinite lines - a useful understanding for when they find gradients of curves in year 10 and 11 by using straight line tangents on quadratic curves. Additionally, the activities enabled students to practice their understanding of applying rules and improve their dexterity and attention to detail when drawing complex shapes. Skills that can all be applied when curve sketching from equations of parabolas, exponential graphs, and reciprocal graphs. The students were also introduced to Modulus Mathematics, something that is only covered in Year 13. As the students constructed their curves, they were encouraged to adjust their drawings when they spotted patterns that could be made within the drawing; this observation led to some interesting tessellations.
