YANGON HISTORY

Yangon has Burmese, British, Chinese, and Indian influences and is known for its colonial architecture, as a 19th-century British colonial capital. In recent years, there's been renewed interest in saving these historical buildings while new high rises, shopping malls, and condominiums spring up all over the city.

Yangon has been rapidly catching up with modern technology, after seeing the first influx of mobile phones in 2013. Now, an estimated 90% of the population has smartphones. You can book a taxi on a smartphone and pay at some restaurants with a card. ATMs are also much more accessible around the city and in all shopping malls.

PLACES TO VISIT

Travelling in Myanmar has challenges but the journey makes the destination that much greater. There are many local airlines that fly between main tourist destinations like Mandalay, Heho (for Inle Lake), Nyaung U (for Bagan), and Thandwe (for Ngapali beach). For the more adventurous destinations, you can get there by private car or bus.

There are more destinations which can be flown to directly within an hour of Yangon. You can reach Bangkok and fly to most places in South East Asia as well as the rest of the world.
