Creating Room For Different Voices
Creating Room For Different Voices This term sees an exciting partnership formed between BVIS and the Nhan Chinh School for Deaf Children. Our Secondary students meet up once a week during ECA time to brainstorm ways in which they can be of service to deaf children at Nhan Chinh, and at the same time learn how to communicate with others who do not have the same ease of communication as themselves.

This term sees an exciting partnership formed between BVIS and the Nhan Chinh School for Deaf Children. Our Secondary students meet up once a week during ECA time to brainstorm ways in which they can be of service to deaf children at Nhan Chinh, and at the same time learn how to communicate with others who do not have the same ease of communication as themselves.

As students begin to explore sign language, we can see present that sense of excitement when they try to greet each other and say their names with hand gestures. The classroom was quiet, and our students paid close attention to every movement of the deaf teacher. To walk in the shoes of the deaf, students take to their heart the lesson of “active listening”, and become increasingly aware of the privilege of hearing and speaking.  It is easy to take these faculties for granted. Our hope is that from this understanding, students will learn to respect and create room for different voices.

This week, students continue to prepare for the visit from Nhan Chinh School which is happening in October. Many of them can’t wait to meet the children. Please look out for an exciting exchange to come, and we will be sure to keep you updated.
